We're thrilled to welcome back experienced tutor Sonny Tonihi. If you've attended a previous wānanga with us, it's likely you'll know and love learning with Sonny.
We're also grateful for Te Hukotai and Te Ukaipo from Ngā Herenga Waka, for sharing their talents and leading another Kapa Haka Wānanga for our community.
Thanks to the Community Organisation Grants Scheme (COGS) this is the third installment in a series wānanga to be held in Fiordland over 2 years.

What to expect
Kapa Haka Wānanga - Māori performance for beginners
Learn the fundamentals of Kapa Haka with items such as:
- hīmene (hymns)
- waiata-ā-ringa (action songs)
- karakia (prayer)
- mōteatea (traditional chant)
- haka pōwhiri (welcome haka)
Expect to hear about pūrākau (myths/stories), hītori (history) and whakapapa (genealogy) along the way.
About your tutors: Te Ukaipo Rangihau + Te-Hukatai Tonihi
Te Ukaipo is a Kaiawhina for Te Reo Māori Level 1-2 at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa ki Murihiku. Raised on the marae by his hapū, Te Ukaipo’s first language was Te Reo Māori and was surrounded by talented people; from tohunga pūoro to kairākau and toa taua. He’s driven by the pure beauty Māori culture and enjoys sharing new things to get to know others and most of all have a good time.
Te-Hukatai is a Kura Kaupapa Māori Aho Matua teacher, currently teaching at Te Wharekura o Arowhenua. She is very passionate about Te Ao Māori, her aspiration is to raise both her and Te Ukaipo’s tamariki in a full Te Reo Māori emersion home and world.
Te Reo Māori 101 - Māori Language for adult beginners
Learn the basics of Te Reo Māori. From your pepeha, to simple sentence structures and correct pronunciation. Through play and song, start your Reo Māori 101 journey now.
This wānanga is primarily for adult learning but children are welcome to be present. There will be some books and toys available or BYO. It will be a fun environment where everyone can feel comfortable becoming accustomed with the basics of Te Reo.
About your tutor: Sonny Tonihi
Currently, Te Whatu Ora - Southern District Health Board Tikanga Māori Advisor. For the past 20 years Sonny taught Te Reo Māori at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa ki Murihiku covering the Southland/Otago districts. He is also a long standing supporter and collaborator of the Te Anau Waitangi Day festivities.
